Dudoc-Sanctuary hospital Is located in Durdoc Center, 460 Anton Lembede Street, Durban.
It has a 36 beds that was approved by the Department of Health and opened in November 2018. A further 64 bed physical rehabilitation unit will be ready in two phases - 32 beds [8th floor] in 2021 and 32 beds [7th floor] in 2022.
Patients infected with Covid-19 maybe totally asymptomatic or have mild, moderate or severe symptoms. The large number of patients needing admission has strained the health care system.
Patients with mild to moderate symptoms admitted to acute hospitals utilize beds that can be used for patients needing ventilation and life support.
Most efficient use of limited resources [hospitals and specialist physicians] require a tiered approach. Medical aids are now offering general practitioners to do direct admission of mild to moderate covid patients to selected sub-acute hospitals.
These sub-acute hospitals are specifically equipped to deal with Covid patients and have oxygen readily available.
These are other sub-acute hospitals that can admit Covid patients.
∙ Direct admissions will be approved for a 3-day length of stay without any request for a letter of
motivation, pathology or radiology results. A motivation will however be required for an
extension to the 3-day approval.
∙ Where a COVID-19 positive patient/member is currently admitted to an acute hospital/facility
and the treating doctor would like to transfer the patient/member to a sub-acute facility, the
request will be allowed for 3 days without requesting motivations or clinical results. A
motivation will however be required for an extension of the 3-day approval.
